Winter Red Holly, also known as Ilex verticillata ‘Winter Red’, is a cultivar of the deciduous Winterberry Holly bush native to North America. It's one of the loveliest winter landscape additions out there.

Typically growing to 6-8 feet tall, Winter Red Winterberry Holly fits well in both big and small gardens. The deciduous shrub has an upright rounded habit, spine-less lustrous dark green leaves, and produces bright red fruit in abundance when there's a male plant nearby.

Without a male pollinator close by, it wouldn't be able to produce berries. Southern gentleman is generally a preferred companion. The bright red berries are its most striking feature in the winter landscape against pure snow. But it definitely doesn't lack in other aesthetical qualities. In fall, the female shrub's foliage turns attractive shades of burgundy red, with striking red stems that are revealed once the leaves fall.

Winter Red Holly is easy to grow. It needs medium moisture and well-drained soil. However, it tolerates poorly drained soils as well as wet boggy conditions but does poorly in neutral to alkaline soils which can kill it. It tolerates partial shade but gives a better fruit display in the full sun.

Otherwise, the shrub is generally pest and disease-free, and deer-resistant. Pruning is not required but rewards you with more striking winter stem color. Winter Red Holly can also be propagated by cutting and rooting stem cuttings, which will grow much faster than seeds.

Pollination Info

Pollination Information for Winter Red Holly (Ilex verticillata 'Winter Red')

Winter Red Holly (Ilex verticillata 'Winter Red') is a deciduous shrub with small whitish-green flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer. The plant is dioecious, meaning it has separate male and female plants. Both the male and female plants produce small white flowers, but only the female plants will produce the bright red berries that the plant is known for.

The flowers of the Winter Red Holly are pollinated by bees and other insects that are attracted to the sweet nectar produced by the flowers. The nectar is located at the base of the flower, and as the insects feed on the nectar, they inadvertently brush against the flower's stamens, which contain the plant's pollen. The pollen then sticks to the insect's body and is transferred to the next flower the insect visits, allowing for cross-pollination between plants.

It is important to note that Winter Red Holly requires both a male and female plant in order for the female plant to produce berries. Therefore, if you want to see the signature red berries on your plant, you will need to have a male plant nearby to fertilize the female flowers.
