Garden Delights: The Allure of Phlox Flowers - Shrubhub

Phlox is a common garden plant that comes in many forms, with nearly 70 species of perennial and annual varieties, from creeping to tall or “garden” varieties that display bright, pretty flowers that bloom from mid-spring through late summer. Its colors range from white to shades of pink, purple, and blue. Most phlox will bloom in partial shade conditions. The taller varieties of the species make for amazing cut flowers and are highly attractive to pollinators. It is a popular choice for cottage gardens.

Light Needs
Although they may withstand full sunlight, most phlox flowers fare best in moderate light and moss or creeping varieties can even bloom even in deep shade.

Soil Preferences

Phlox requires rich compost-filled, well-drained soil. It should be neutral to slightly acidic.

Water
To assist Phlox in avoiding mildew, it is best to water them from the base rather than from above. Although phlox can withstand moderate drought, they do require frequent irrigation during flowering season.

Humidity and Temperature
On a hot summer day, tall phlox may wilt a little. If the stems or blooms droop, give them cool water at the base. Phlox is susceptible to humidity because of its propensity for powdery mildew to develop on the leaves. This mildew can produce a pale grey bloom on the leaves that is harmless, but it is not very attractive. Making sure the phlox plants have enough air circulation is the easiest way to prevent the mildew from forming, so make sure they have enough room to grow.

Applying Fertiliser
Although Phlox rarely need fertiliser, you’ll want to add some nutrients if your soil is poor. In autumn, tall and forest Phlox plants might also benefit from a small amount of compost or composted manure.
